There is an area of Bologna where the buildings of the ancient city power and the symbols of the faith are close to each other, as if to testify to the two souls of the city: between the government of the free Commune and the area of papal influence. This area lies between Via Santo Stefano, Via Castiglione and Piazza dei Tribunali.
We are in the heart of historical Bologna: under the Asinelli Tower begins Via Castiglione, which after a few steps flanks Piazza della Mercanzia, from which Via Santo Stefano starts. The Palazzo della Mercanzia is the first symbol of the city government we come across: for over 6 centuries it has regulated the rules of trade in Bologna.
On the side of Via Santo Stefano, after a few metres, there is an open space that creates one of the most evocative views of Bologna, with Palazzo Isolani on the left and other palaces of the city’s seigniories on the right and the Basilica of Santo Stefano in front.
