MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna del Settore Musei Civici Bologna is pleased to present, from 30 June to 10 September 2023, the first retrospective ever dedicated in Italy to the dancer, choreographer, director, theorist and poet Yvonne Rainer (San Francisco, 1934): Yvonne Rainer: Words, Dances, Films, curated by Caterina Molteni.
The exhibition explores the relationships between the author’s choreographic, filmic and theoretical production starting with the historical reconstruction of her transition from dance to film.
Internationally known for revolutionising the world of dance by promoting a minimalist approach in the 1960s that found inspiration in the natural kinetic movement of the body and in everyday gestures, Rainer began her career as a director in 1972, the year her first film Lives of Performers was released.
The exhibition consists of videos, films made between 1972 and 1996, recently restored by the MoMA – Modern Art Museum of New York with the support of The Celeste Bartos Fund for Film Preservation, writings that delve into his theoretical production, and a section dedicated to archive materials that chronologically reconstructs Rainer’s revolution in the New York dance world with documents from the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.
