Barca was conceived at the end of the 1950s as a ‘quarter-city’, a place with all the functions useful to the life and activities of its inhabitants, so as to have full autonomy from the rest of the city of Bologna. Although the neighbourhood was not realised according to the forecasts of its vast initial project, it has very recognisable characteristics, which make it one of the most iconic areas of Bologna. During this cycle of walks we will explore the streets, parks and architecture of this district in the western suburbs of Bologna, wedged between the bend of the Reno river: a key place to understand the developments of post-World War II Bologna, its most important urban and housing policies and its most evident physical and social transformations. Together we will visit some of the key buildings in the district (including the famous Treno, designed by Giuseppe Vaccaro, which has also become one of the buildings/areas of Bologna’s Unesco World Heritage porticoes) and try to understand the particular conformation and identity of the urban spaces that still characterise the Barca today, more than sixty years after its construction. The walks are open to everyone.
