For the second consecutive year, Sotto le Stelle del Cinema presents an evening entirely dedicated to photojournalism, in collaboration with the Photo Image photography school and the World Press Photo Foundation.
On Monday, July 15th at 9.45 pm on the Piazza’s big screen, the winning photos of the World Press Photo 2019 will be projected, in the presence of Lars Boering, director of the World Press Photo Foundation, Gian Luca Farinelli, director of the Cineteca di Bologna, and Fulvio Bugani (Image Image), winner of the award in 2015.
The jury examined 78,801 photographs of 4,738 photographers from 129 countries and awarded photographers in eight different categories divided between “single photo” and “story”. Three of the winners are Italian:
Lorenzo Tugnoli, photographer of the Contrasto agency, winner in the “General News, Stories” category, with a work on the humanitarian tragedy in Yemen, also a finalist in the World Press Photo Story of the Year and Pulitzer Prize for photography.

The World Press Photo
It is the most prestigious photojournalism competition in the world. It awards the best shots of the last year, evaluating both the story told and their visual strength. The competition is organized by the World Press Photo Foundation, a non-profit foundation founded in 1955 in Amsterdam. It is divided into different categories and the prizes are awarded by a jury made up of independent professionals who change every year. The winning photos are collected in a traveling exhibition that travels in 45 countries around the world and is visited by over four million people. They are also published in a dedicated volume available in multiple languages.
