At the Archaeological Civic Museum of Bologna part of the restoration open to the public of a rare lion-shaped funerary sculpture from the Sepulcher of the Margherita Gardens.

During the month of July, every Wednesday, visitors to the Archaeological Civic Museum will be able to experience one of the most fascinating experiences in which it may happen to come across the many activities that every day animate the “behind the scenes” of a museum: observe the works in course of a restoration open to public viewing.
The subject of the conservative intervention is an all-round funerary sculpture in sandstone that depicts a crouching lion with its mouth wide open, coming from the Etruscan necropolis of the Margherita Gardens in Bologna and datable to the end of the 6th century BC
The finding, which had the function of a signpost, that is of a tombstone placed at ground level to identify exactly the place of a burial, was found at the tomb 192 and comes from the excavation campaigns directed by the archaeologist Edward Brizio between 1887 and 1889, in continuation of the first researches started in 1876 by Antonio Zannoni during the works for the realization of the public park of the Giardini Margherita, which would have led to the discovery of one of the most important necropolis of Etruscan Bologna.
The operations will be performed every Wednesday, in the month of July, from 9.30 am to 4 pm, inside a box-laboratory located between the display cases of the Egyptian section of the museum, to allow the public to witness “live” the patient restoration work .
