The MAMbo – Modern Art Museum of Bologna is located in an area of the city originally used for production and commercial activities.
It traces the history of Italian art from the second post-war period to today, exploring the present through an exhibition focused on research and contributes to tracing new ways of art by following the most innovative and pulsating practical experiments.
The whole area between the axis via Irnerio, via Dei Mille, via Don Minzoni on one side, and via Riva di Reno, via Righi and via delle Moline on the other still preserves in some place names the memory of the Bologna of the waters, to starting from via del Porto, and in some places you can admire some glimpses of the canals running between the buildings or between the meadows, as in the case of the Cavaticcio canal which gives its name to the park in which it flows, in the heart of the Manifattura delle Arti, a area that takes its name from the shops that once operated in that area thanks to the canal mills.
The important restoration project of this area includes the MAMbo (in the former Forno del Pane), the DMS faculty (in the former Manifattura Tabacchi), the Cineteca (in the former Macello) and the Cassero (in the former Salara) . The presence of the museum in this district reinforces the idea of the museum as a new center of production, experimentation and cultural innovation.
The history of MAMbo is linked to the Gallery of Modern Art in Bologna, an institution that gave rise to the current museum and on which the foundations of research, the project and the cultural debate are still based.
