Among 18th-century Japanese artists influenced by European art, Maruyama Ôkyo is undoubtedly the most important, both for the high quality of many of his works and for the extent of the influence he exerted until the early 20th century. His studies from life of plants and animals, in terms of precision and beauty, can stand comparison with the best European examples. At the same time, some of his paintings on screens or walls have a rhythm and decorative scope that place them among the greatest masterpieces of Japanese art.
