For the Europe-Japan Round Trip cycle. The Fascination of the Other in Painting, second lecture entitled: The Lyrical and Decorative Naturalism of Maruyama Ôkyo (1733-1795), curated by Giovanni Peternolli (Centre for the Study of Far Eastern Art).
Among 18th-century Japanese artists influenced by European art, Maruyama Ôkyo is undoubtedly the most important, both for the high quality of many of his works and for the extent of the influence he exerted until the early 20th century. His studies from life of plants and animals, in terms of precision and beauty, can stand comparison with the best European examples. At the same time, some of his paintings on screens or walls have a rhythm and decorative scope that place them among the greatest masterpieces of Japanese art.
