The exhibition presents to the public a significant part of the collections of the Indian City Museum, inaugurated in the Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio in 1907, thanks to the participation of the municipal and university authorities, and closed in 1935, following the death of its founder, Francesco Lorenzo Pullè .
The name of the Museum suggests the presence of collections only linked to the artistic and cultural landscape of India, but in reality the collections were made up of materials from India, China and Japan, now preserved in the Medieval Civic Museum and the Palace Museum Poggi, who collaborates with the initiative with some loans. Particular importance is given to the presence of statues of the Himalayan and Chinese Buddhist pantheon, as well as to the very rich photographic collection, which is one of the most conspicuous and detailed collections of reproductions referring to the art of Gandhara present in Europe and, in all probability, world, surpassing for similar importance collections filed at the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
The exhibition therefore aims to present the rich heritage of Buddhist matrix materials available, including some important recently restored objects, without forgetting to consider the artistic expressions of India’s own Hindu culture.
