The Cathedral of San Pietro is the main place of worship in Bologna. It is located in Via Indipendenza, the heart of the historic city center.
The origins of the building, formerly equipped with a baptistery in front of the façade, sink in the dawn of the Christian era even if the first testimonies date back to the X century.
Various changes have been made to the cathedral over the centuries, first devastated by a fire in August 1131, then severely tested by an earthquake in 122
The characteristic of the cathedral is the bell tower, the second tower for height of the city, is 70 meters high. In reality they are two towers built at different times (X and XIII centuries) one inside the other.
The bell tower houses, in fact, the largest bell that can be played “Bolognese” (in a timed manner and with complete rotation of the bell) and weighs 33 quintals. The bell concert weighs a total of 65 quintals.
From the tower you can enjoy a picturesque view of the city center and the hills.
It is open every Saturday from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm and from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
