Until 18 July 2021, the Lercaro Collection exhibits in its rooms the votive canopy built by the citizens of Bologna at the end of the terrible plague epidemic of 1630 and, since 1634, used for the city processions of thanksgiving to the Virgin of the Rosary.
Made of velvet, silk, gold and silver threads, the precious artifact is composed of an iridescent blue silk cover quilted with golden stars and 4 side bands on which the patron saints of the individual Corporations. Extraordinarily preserved, it appears as the result of a very meticulous work of artistic craftsmanship capable of wisely harmonizing mastery of technique and religious devotion.
In the heart of the second spring marked by the Coronavirus, therefore, the Lercaro Collection wants to offer the public not only the enjoyment of a city masterpiece, but also and above all a concrete opportunity to relate the present time with the past and with all its brought human and cultural, come to us in the form of collective history and traditions.
The work, recently recovered thanks to the intervention of Rotary citizens and then returned to the Basilica of San Domenico, where it is kept on behalf of the property (Fondo Edifici di Culto), is normally not accessible to the public.
Today, while the Coronavirus epidemic is struggling to be eradicated, this “gift” recalls the other great epidemic, the commitment of the City and above all the ability to start from beauty.
