The exhibition Sturmtruppen. 50 years, organized by the Carisbo Foundation and Genus Bononiae – Museums in the city in collaboration with Eredi Bonvicini, it is a tribute to the most famous comic book army in the world, the Sturmtruppen which this year are celebrating 50 years of life.
It was 1968 when Bonvi, at the time Franco Bonvicini, presented the first strip of his Sturmtruppen in Lucca winning the prize of Paese Sera as best debutant. The material displayed at Palazzo Fava, over 250 original works, all made available by the Bonvicini Archive and largely unpublished, illustrates the creative mechanisms of the most famous Italian strip in the world, showing its ever-present caustic spirit.
If the heart of the exhibition is dedicated to the Sturmtruppen, there are plenty of digressions in the vast artistic production of the author, from the serial one, with Cattivik and Nick Carter, to the author, to some pictorial works never exhibited and those VM18 with Play Gulp , erotic parody of the whole world of comics. From the reconstruction of the study, with materials and tools that show the creative process, a non-chronological path that highlights how contemporary the thought of an artist who has profoundly influenced the twentieth-century Italian pop culture: not just a cartoonist, but a complete artist, capable of arousing the enthusiasm of the general public as well as intellectuals, from Umberto Eco to Oreste del Buono.
Choral cartoon inhabited by a flurry of characters, the soldiers of the Sturmtruppendi Bonvi, from the simple soldaten to the various Sergenten, Capitanen, Generalen and Cuoken, up to the proud alleaten Galeazzo Musolesi, the only character with identity, the Sturmtruppen soon become the antimicitarist comic , denouncing the stupid bestiality of the war.
But despite the circumscribed setting in time – the Second World War – and in space – the Germanic trenches in which all are expressed in an unmistakable “German” slang, the Sturmtruppen become a fresco of humanity of all time, turning into archetypes in their manias and loneliness, in their fears and vices.
Closed in a claustrophobic universe, the characters of Bonvi move on the border of rubble and death, with an enemy invisible to the eyes but echoing with thundering shots and cannons, never losing the opportunity to ridicule the pettiness of power and to make fun of , now with a pungent tone, now with tenderness, of human weaknesses.
