On the occasion of the International Day for the rights of children and adolescents and the 30 years of the UN Convention on the rights of children and adolescents, Wednesday 20 November, until 6 January 2020, inauguration in the Auditorium Enzo Biagi of the library The children’s photographic exhibition in Bologna with Elliott Erwitt, Steve McCurry and Dario Mitidieri, curated by Monica Fantini and Fabio Lazzari.
The game, the fun, the study, the health, but also the denied rights, the poverty, the exploitation, the war: these are the themes faced by the photos of the three famous photographers, different from the expressive point of view, but united by the will of witness in first person the emotional participation in the events of the children they met in the most remote corners of the world.
Steve McCurry’s images are always in color and produce a sense of awe and wonder at the expressive uniqueness of the moment and the intensity of the looks that the author managed to capture.
In the case of Dario Mitidieri, the choice to use black and white and the apparent normality of the scenes produce a different but equally strong type of emotional participation, effectively making what Hannah Arendt called “the banality of evil”. Elliott Erwitt, on the other hand, spends time in his childhood, in his becoming future and history together. The prevailing theme of all the authors is that of the game, often without the smile and the carefree that should accompany this fundamental activity for the growth and development of girls and children.
And to the game also the scenography of Peter Bottazzi is recalled, which places the images of McCurry, Mitidieri and Erwitt on structures that refer to the rides, to the wooden blocks for the constructions and to an abacus, symbols of the right to enjoyment, to fantasy and to the ‘instruction.
