One of the most striking places in the city of Bologna is undoubtedly Piazza Santo Stefano.
It is a space that combines architectural history and contemporary life, creating a unique environment. The square, also known as the “Square of the Seven Churches,” is home to the Basilica of Santo Stefano, a monument that lends an imposing beauty to the monumental complex. The Basilica stands at the side of Jerusalem alley; in fact, in ancient times it was called “Sancta Jerusalem.”
The porticoes surrounding the square, dating from different eras and variously remodeled over the centuries, help emphasize the magnificence of the basilica. The aristocratic palaces overlooking the square, such as Casa Berti and Palazzo Bolognini Amorini Salina, add further charm to the atmosphere.
Next to Santo Stefano stands another symbolic church, the Church of San Giovanni in Monte, well connected to Via Castiglione and not far from the former Jesuit church of Santa Lucia, currently home to the Aula Magna of the University of Bologna.
Interesting facts about St. Stephen’s Square:
The square also serves as a meeting point for different social groups, creating an inclusive and lively environment. Its beauty is not ostentatious, but manifests itself in its authenticity and the welcoming atmosphere it offers. In addition, the square is often enlivened by musical events, performances and antique markets, offering a wide variety of experiences to visitors.
During the summer, the arcades offer a pleasant refuge from the mugginess, while in winter the center of the square is warmed by the warm rays of the sun, providing moments of quiet beauty.
