Bologna was and is a great center for the production of art cribs.
It is in particular from the 18th century that the artists who were commissioned to create great saints for churches were also dedicated to the creation of cribs for a high clientele, and also to a serial production of quality.
The refined models of the Scandellari, the Piò and others, have influenced the manufactures that carried on the great tradition of the Bolognese terracotta, which has continued over time and is expressed today in many sculptures and plastification works.
Many notable cribs of the past are present in churches and institutions and collectors, and many are the artists who today are dedicated to the nativity scene, interpreting and keeping the creation of traditional Bolognese figures young and current. Artists, groups, associations, institutions and even private individuals are working to keep alive a great Bolognese tradition and offer admiration of all the most beautiful works.
For this reason, every year it is possible to trace an ideal route that winds through the streets of the city and leads to meet admirably set antique nativity scenes, cribs of recent construction and high quality, notable exhibitions, in an itinerary that enhances environments and artists together from the heart of the city, from the Cortile d’Onore of the Palazzo del Comune, it leads to the suburbs.
The cribs.
