Between universities and art…
From Piazza Ravegnana we take Via Zamboni, we go along up to Piazza Rossini where we can find on the right the CHIESA S. GIACOMO MAGGIORE (1267) of Romanesque style and rebuilt partially at the end of the XV century. The interior is typically of the Renaissance period and keeps treasures: paintings, frescoes, crucifixes, by artists like Ludovico Carracci, Jacopo della Quercia, Lorenzo Costa, Francesco Francia. Turning our back to the church we can see the CONSERVATORIO MUSICALE G.B. MARTINI called after the Bolognese Franciscan father one of the most important musicians in the XVIII century and master of young Mozart during his stay in Bologna. The Conservatory was once an Agostinian monastery and it has been an excellent music school since 1800 through which very famous musicians from Donizetti to Rossini, from Busoni to Martucci passed. Also the library is one of the most important in Europe for the collections of rare music material. We go along Via Zamboni until we get to the main entrance of the TEATRO COMUNALE built by Antonio Galli, called Bibiena,on the ruins of Palazzo Bentivoglio and opened in 1763.
At few meters on the right there is Palazzo Poggi, central office of the Athenaeum since 2 centuries. In the palace there is the Palazzo Poggi’s Museum, that is the exact reconstruction of the laboratories of the Institute of Sciences that was there until 1799. Farther on Via Zamboni crosses with Via delle Belle Arti, in Piazza Puntoni; in front of the square there is the PINACOTECA NAZIONALE (National Art Gallery). In its 30 exhibiting rooms the gallery keeps a collection of great works of art, most of them were saved by Napoleon’s requisition in the churches an in the region. There are paintings by Guido Reni, Perugino, Raffaello, Ludovico, Agostino e Annibale Carracci, Tiziano, Guercino, Domenichino and many other names of the same artistic value (between XV and XVIII century).
