In the context of BOOM! Crescere nei libri and Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Canicola APS in collaboration with Settore Musei Civici Bologna, Casa Morandi and MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna, present the exhibition Elsa, Morandi e l’Uovoverde by Sarah Mazzetti, author of the award-winning I gioielli di Elsa (Canicola, 2017) and winner, among others, of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustration Prize in 2019.
In the spaces of Casa Morandi (via Fondazza 36, Bologna) and the MAMbo Educational Department (via Don Minzoni 14), from 6 March to 30 April 2023, the originals of “Elsa, Morandi and the Uovoverde” will be on display, together with various preparatory materials, a book in which the language of comics merges with illustration, photography and graphics to give life to a story inspired by the famous artist Giorgio Morandi. Through a unique style that has made her an internationally renowned and award-winning signature, Sarah Mazzetti recounts realistic fragments of the master’s life interwoven with a fantastical storyline in which appearances and disappearances, enlargements and shrinkage take us back to the alienating and hypnotic atmosphere of Alice in Wonderland.
Accompanying readers of all ages in their discovery of one of the protagonists of 20th-century Italian painting is Elsa, a nine-year-old girl who bursts into the daily routine of the master’s life and disrupts his routine, until she drags him into a dream set in a suspended city, made of Morandi bottles that have become giant buildings.
And so through this story, the author brings to life the words of architect Frank Gehry, who said in an interview: “When I discovered Giorgio Morandi’s works I went crazy, because he drew bottles that were essentially buildings in a room, he created villages of bottles…”
