The Project Room of MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna confirms its vocation for the reconstruction, narration and valorisation of cultural and artistic experiences that have taken place in Bologna and Emilia-Romagna by hosting the exhibition by Muna Mussie (Eritrea, 1978) Bologna St.173, A journey backwards. Eritrean Congresses and Festivals in Bologna, which opens on Thursday 1 June at 6 p.m. with the collective performance Uroboro and remains open from 2 June to 10 September 2023.
The project, curated by Francesca Verga with Archive Ensemble, reactivates the artist's personal memory and the historical and iconographic archive of the Eritrean Congresses and Festivals held in Bologna continuously from 1972 to 1991. Starting from the bond that unites Eritrea, the artist's native country, and Bologna, his adoptive city, Muna Mussie delivers a narrative and a mapping out of the Eritrean Congresses and Festivals, through the consultation of public and private archives collected in the Bolognese territory.
Bologna St.173, A journey backwards. Eritrean Congresses and Festivals in Bologna is realised thanks to the support of the Italian Council (11th edition, 2022), a programme for the international promotion of Italian art of the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture. The programme includes the donation to MAMbo of a work that will be completed at the end of Muna Mussie's research process.
The exhibition at the museum in Bologna also stems from dialogue and discussion with Archive Kabinett and follows Muna Mussie's solo exhibition entitled Bologna St. 173. Il sole d'agosto, in alto nel cielo, batte forte (Milan 2021), curated by Zasha Colah and Chiara Figone.
The exhibition is part of Bologna Estate 2023, the programme of activities promoted and coordinated by the Municipality of Bologna and the Metropolitan City of Bologna - Bologna-Modena Tourist Territory.
