At the Archaeological Civic Museum, in via dell’Archiginnasio 2, the Ex Africa exhibition from 29 March to 8 September 2019.
An exhibition to tell how African and European events from ancient times to today are interwoven through “stories” of art, identity, travel and meetings starting from the chronicles of travel and the first contacts between Europeans and Africans.
An exhibition divided into several sections: from the formal quality expressed in works of large and small size, to the ancient objects of the famous African kingdoms together with the masks, to the ritual and power figures.
The new frontiers of research on African art are also proposed: the antiquity of those manifestations and the identification of some “hands of the masters” and with an investigation section on the different aesthetics of vodu, an accumulative art imbued with sacredness in its persistent becoming with works that are exhibited in Italy for the first time.
An exhibition curated by Ezio Bassani and Gigi Pezzoli, with the contribution of Italian and foreign scholars, and in memory of Bassani himself, who died suddenly during the work of the project and figure to whom we owe the spread of knowledge of African art in our country .
Not an ethnographic exhibition but a great exhibition that overcomes the generalist / specialist dichotomy, aiming to tell stories of art, identity, power, sacredness, meetings and dialogues.
Ex Africa presents the value of African art, reconstructing the historical and cultural context from which it derives, coming to the legacy and influence in early twentieth century European painting with primitivism and the so-called Art Nègre, up to touch the fields of contemporary African art.
A unique and unrepeatable exhibition, for a story to be known to recognize.
Due to the exceptional nature of the loans, the exhibition is designed specifically and solely for Bologna and cannot therefore have other locations.
The UN considered the project to be consistent with the goals of the 2030 development agenda.
