Welcome to Bologna…
Bologna can boast incomparable historical supremacy that made it in the past an important reference point for centuries from the society of the “City States” and “Seignory” to modern times.
Its origins are very old when it was called Felsina during Etruscan settlement in the VII century B.C. Then it became a Roman colony in 189 B.C., its name was Bononia and it developed with Rome.
It flourished from X to XVI century: during this period there was the birth of the city state; in 1088 the most ancient university of the western world was founded; the decree Liber Paradisus set all slaves free and slavery was abolished by the free city state of Bologna.
In these centuries there was a huge building expansion and for this Bologna has one of the biggest historical centre in Europe with more than 42 km of porticos which made the city famous along with its towers; they were about a hundred and they were often connected by risky passages hanging on covered gangways
Today we have only twenty of these towers, but they give us an idea of the economical and building power of ancient Bologna.
